A Style Guide to Accessorizing

The quality of any accessory must determine its price. Always remember that quality accessories last longer. No matter how you look at it— inferior quality can break down fast during normal wear and tear. In this post, I outline some of my most important fashion rules as they pertain to mastering the skill of accessorizing. Let’s start off with these three fundamentals: buy always the best quality that you can afford, don’t ignore workmanship and make sure you have the poise to carry through whatever you wear. Three factors that determine the price of an accessory? The materials used (gold, silver, silk, leather, etc), the quality of design and the quality of workmanship.

   Why Accessories Are Important

  • They can make your wardrobe seem larger
  • They can update your basics
  • They can add color or splash
  • They can focus the observer’s eye on the emphasis you want
  • They can change the outlook of your situation in a short time. Like turning a look from drab to instant fab
  • They can make or break an outfit

       Important Rules to Style By
    • More at the waist means less at the neck and vice versa.
    • Accessories should be proportionate and harmonize with the size, shape, and color of your outfit. Trial and error is a very good practice— using basic pieces first and adding trendier items later.
    • Too much of one color can sometimes look awkward and too matchy-matchy. Incorporating complementary colors can create a nice contrast. So unleash your inner color-blocking—especially in the spring and summer months.
    • Petites should watch the size balance to their accessories. Petites have to be particularly careful when accessorizing. Over-accessorizing (too much in the wrong places) can throw off the balance of your frame. This is the perfect time to understand when less is more.
    • Quality made accessories will last the test of time. It’s okay to spend a little more for classic accessories like that classic black handbag or pumps. You’ll get plenty of wear out of them and you’ll be sure to get a great return on your investment.
    • Classic styles date less than novelty or trendy designs. To reiterate my previous point, opt for more classics—-less trends. You’ll save time, money and energy over the years.
    • Always keep leather shoes, belts and bags well maintained with regular visits to the leather repair shop.Proper maintenance of your leather goods is so important. They only last as long as you care for them.
    • Don’t overdo.
