What makes a great album great? The inability to pick out a favorite song. When I first discovered the artist SZA, she had just signed to independent record label TDE. Home of the skillful and lyrically gifted Kendrick Lamar. The album Z isn't your typical R&B project. Although a tad bit reminiscent of another recent R&B comer---Jhené Aiko who also brings a new and unique sound to R&B, the smooth and easy sound of Z is electrifying. It's that kind of album that you simply press play to without the need to fast forward. Certainly the A&R folks over at TDE  had a vision when signing the first lady of the label. Prince's protégé Liv Warfield is certainly an artist to watch for. The Peoria, IL native packs a mean punch in the soul department. While attending college in Portland, Oregon---she was a regular performer on the local music scene. Who are some of her music influences you ask? Heroines like Nina Simone, Etta James, Tina Turner, Sade, and Mary J. Blige to name a few. Her sultry voice coupled with an edgy rock n' roll twist makes her quite an distinctive artist. I've always been one to believe that the three most fundamental things to understanding and embracing worldly culture is music, food and fashion. So it is by no surprise that all three of these art driven expressions help to bring tremendous balance to my life. A great understanding for each other and what makes each of us so uniquely but perfectly different is mostly driven by what our cultural influences are; which brings us back to the type of music we listen to.
