Nothing speaks confidence like a woman rocking the perfect red lip. But the challenge still remains–what’s my perfect shade? What’s my perfect texture? Is the matte? Is it satin? Should I go with a pencil, lipstick or gloss? I know, the dilemma! I could remember admiring women that could rock a mean red lip for years. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I figured I’d go against the increasingly popular notion that dark skin women couldn’t pull off a red lip. I know. Shame on them for they not know what they do! Fast forward to today and I will rock a red lip quite confidently. I’ve collected red lipsticks for years. From Avon, Mary Kay to drug store brands—I’ve had my share of them. Here are a couple of my favorites. Do you rock a red lip? What are some of your favorites?
I’ve tried all of these reds and currently own Chanel Rouge Allure, YSL Rouge Pur, MAC Diva, NARS Pure Matte and Makeup Forever Aqua pencil. Depending on the occasion and mood, one of these will make the cut on any given day or night for that matter.
- Chanel Rouge Allure – A richer and vibrant red with a satin finish. I really turn to this one when I definitely want to a statement.
- YSL Rouge Pur #11 – This gloss is interesting because the true color is a shade darker once it is applied and settles on the lips. I’m in love with this gloss.
- MAC Diva – I’ve rocked this lipstick for a couple of years. It’s probably the oldest lipstick in my collection. It has a matte finish and is a shade darker than the Chanel Allure. It’s a great option.
- NARS Pure Matte – I’m actually rocking this lipstick in my previous post. I managed to misplace it this weekend so it looks like I’ll be making a quick trip to Sephora soon.
- Makeup Forever Aqua Lipliner – I use this as a liner when necessary. I’ve also applied it to the entire lip wearing it as a matte lipstick. It works quite well.

Honestly the best lipstick "chart" ever! I love a good red lip, I've been a die hard fan of Mac' Ruby Woo, but might have to try Black Opal's Heat Wave – the price is right 🙂
Thanks Charlotte. Ruby Woo was definitely a popular choice by many.
I love me a great red lippy! Yes mam!
I can't do without my red lippie hun. Don't know what took me to long to embrace the boldness.
Thank you, I am not a big Lipstick or makeup wearer at all, but I am trying to do better, since I am taking more and posting more pics of myself. Thanks lovely.
One step at a time Mel. I enjoy your frequent postings hun.
Great choices! My favourite is the Chanel #99, but I definitely want to try YSL and the MAC products.
OMG Neo….that Chanel #99 is all that and a bag of chips! I love it.
Great share I wish I could keep lipstick on for longer than half an hour lol!!
LOL! There is always a need to reapply indeed. 🙂
I don't do lipsticks, but red lippies have always attracted me. Might just try it one day. 🙂

Go for it Missy!
Oooh! I love that you shared this with us! I love MAC's Ruby Woo but I'm definitely going to try some of these.
I started out with MAC first but ventured out later. There are great options out there.
Ruby woo is so perfect. Great list!
It's definitely a favorite amongst many beautyholics.
It took me years to think I could pull off a red lip. But for the last 2 years I've tried several brands and shades. I like a glossy red lip (but not greasy looking) over a matte finish. I've tried MAC and Fashion Fair and a few drugstore brands. So far I've stuck with the Fashion Fair brand the longest. Wish I had it here with me now so that I could share the name. 🙁
Pam
Oohhh…Fashion Fair. OMG, they use to have this light purple frosty lipstick that was oh so fabulous. Totally forgot about the FF brand. Will have to pay them a visit soon. Thanks hun!
