10 Weird Beauty Hacks

There are so many unconventional beauty hacks and tricks out there. Some of the most useful ones doesn’t involve a trip to your luxury department store counter, but rather a quick trip to your kitchen pantry or medicine cabinet. Have you ever mentioned a health and/or beauty  issue to your mama to only get some weird recommendation that involves the weirdest home remedy? You follow up with the ultimate side eye because you think that mom has lost her God given mind. Well, many of those unconventional home remedies are spot on and I’ve listed ten of my favorites that will be sure to keep you looking beautiful.
  1. Toothpaste – Applying a base coat to your nails prior to applying your color polish prevents the nail from becoming stained. But just in case you still become the victim of stained fingernails, simply scrubbing your nails with a whitening-based toothpaste will remove any stains.
  2. Eggs – The egg yolk is rich in fat and protein and is a natural moisturizer. The white, which contains antimicrobial peptides, removes unwanted oils and toxins. Use the entire egg to condition normal hair. To treat oily hair, use the egg whites only and the yolk to moisturize dry and brittle hair.  Use enough egg to coat the entire head. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse with cool water (no warm or hot water, you don’t want the egg to cook in your hair) then shampoo hair. Whole egg and yolk treatments can be applied once a month; while whites can be applied every two weeks.
  3. Lemon – Lemon can also be used to remove unwanted fingernail stains. However, this acidic natural can serve many purposes including nail strengthener. Got too many acrylic manicures that have left your nails weak and brittle? Combine lemon juice and olive oil in a bowl, then soak and watch those brittle yellow nails return to its beautiful state.
  4. Lotion – Got a problematic piece of strand hair? Whip out that bottle of Jergens and apply a small amount to the problem strand and watch it easily fall into place.
  5. Baby Oil – Not sure what to do with those broken pieces of bronze blush? Crumble them to pieces and add to a bottle of baby oil to create your very own bronzing oil.
  6. Oatmeal – This has been a lifesaver in my house especially having a child who suffers from eczema. Simply soak in an oatmeal bath to relieve any itching and irritation of the skin. Also create a homemade facial by mixing raw oatmeal, water and honey in a bowl. For a smoother application, I recommend blending oatmeal in a blender to break down the chunks into smaller components. Apply to the face and let it sit for 10 minutes, then wash with lukewarm water. Honey is an excellent treatment for acne, as it removes bacteria that accumulates on the skin.
  7. Pepto-Bismol – Ha. I know this sounds crazy. But Pepto-Bismol can rejuvenate your dull skin after a few applications. Simply soak a cotton ball or pad with Pepto-Bismol and apply to the entire face and/or neck. Let it sit and dry for 10-15 minutes. Peel off mask, then wash face with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  8. Mayonnaise – Yup, a good ole jar of Hellmann’s mayo does the hair good. After a good hair wash, scoop out a nice handful of Hellmann’s and massage it into your hair and scalp. Apply a shower cap and let it sit for 20 minutes. This will strengthen and moisture your hair probably better than any product found at your local beauty salon. The down side? Your hair might smell like an egg sandwich. LOL
  9. Preparation H – Lacking sleep and it shows under the eyes? Apply Preparation H ointment to those bags overnight and see them deflate by sunrise. Yup, this is no old wives’ tale or urban legend.
  10. Coffee Grounds – Add in some brown sugar and olive or coconut oil and you have yourself a great and natural facial scrub. I sometimes use this concoction on my thighs to help reduce my cellulite (oh the struggle).
So save yourself some dinero by literally shopping your pantry for those household goods that are proven to rid you of your next beauty ailment. Until next time…..Peace, Love & Blessings!
